2021 has been a crazy year for everyone. I’ve watched people I love pass away or move on to new adventures. I’ve stood witness to wold changing events but for this very brief blog post, I wanted to look inwards. These are things I will remember when I get to reminisce in the future.
Since sending out She Lives Alone to festivals, I’ve been hankering to get back on set. While I didn’t get the chance this year to get back behind the camera, we’ve finally started prepping for our next film which is due to shoot in February 2022. The writing process for my forthcoming film, Taste, has been one of the most difficult writing journeys I’ve ever experienced. The idea for Taste started invading my mind about five years ago and after two years of extremely rigorous development, we finally landed on a script we felt was ready to meet production. Even though it’s only 10 pages, this felt like a huge achievement. I’ve never been more proud of a piece of written work in my career and I can’t wait to bring it to life.
I also had some other really amazing experiences this year. I got to work with the amazing Kate Leys and Stew le Marechal on my treatment via the EIFF Talent Lab Connects (along with my amazing producer, Maria Caruana Galizia). After more than a year of having the bones of a story in my head, I now have a treatment I am extremely proud of. I couldn’t have done it without the invaluable resources this lab offered me.
I’ve also put my head down and worked really hard on my writing. I was more ambitious this year with where I submitted my work and it was so worth it. This year, I has a piece of fiction published in Mslexia, which is my first major publication. I was also shortlisted for the John le Carre Scholarship at Curtis Brown Creative.
Alongside some of these achievements, I got an MA with distinction in Creative Writing and left the freelancing world so I could make some roots in a copywriting position at CloudM, a brilliant tech company based in Manchester.
I’m so thankful for everyone who has supported me this year (believe me when I say that it’s had the most profound impact on me). I’m so grateful for every opportunity I have received.
Sending much love to everyone for 2022.
